The QBE Foundation has awarded Save the Children Canada approximately 90,000 Canadian dollars to support the remote Métis communities most affected by this summer’s wildfires in Alberta.
Many residents had to evacuate as more than 1,000 wildfires raged through the province, destroying over 50 homes. For some Métis settlements, residents were temporarily displaced to large cities.
The QBE Foundation has provided funding to support Save the Children’s disaster relief efforts: the European branch has contributed CAD 45,731 and the global branch AUD 50,000 (which converts to about CAD 95,000).
Building on Save the Children’s partnership with the Métis Nation of Alberta, the initiative is providing 150 emergency kits to families affected by wildfires, reaching approximately 600 people. These kits include essential items such as food, clothing, and educational materials for children. This program mostly aims to reach Métis people in rural and remote settlements as they are most likely to be evacuated due to fires.
Save the Children will also organize a session where QBE employees can learn more about its National Reconciliation Program, gain insight into the priorities of Indigenous communities for their children and become champions for children rights.
